The summer of ‘88 was a technicolor dreamscape. Neon wetsuits flashed in the surf as the Pixies blared through the radio asking, “Where is my mind?” Sea foam swelled. In the small stretch between 54th and 56th streets of Echo Beach, small ripples were standard fare. Big wave craze had not yet made its splash. The surfer girl of the 60s was long gone, and in her wake lingered a day-glo daze.

Palms swayed under the turmeric sun. Agua fresca and fresh fruit were carted up and down sand-streaked streets, generous squeezes of lime and Tajin. Rainbow umbrellas dotted the horizon. Cool ocean breezes cut through the air, heavy with salt and ripe hibiscus.

Hot sun-kissed sand burned soles running faster into the roaring blue. Wet sand forming to the touch, breaking with each wave. The crisp snap of a can; refreshing as a deep ocean plunge.
